AJA

At Wexford Arts Centre Theatre · Cornmarket, Wexford, Co. Wexford

AJA musical performance

If you grew up with Steely Dan, or have spent any time falling down that rabbit hole of jazz-inflected rock perfection, an evening with AJA is going to hit hard. This Dublin eight-piece has spent over thirteen years doing something genuinely difficult - replicating Steely Dan’s studio-perfect sound on a live stage, right down to the brass lines, the guitar solos, the keyboard fills, and those close vocal harmonies. The Wexford Arts Centre Theatre, a beautifully restored Georgian building in the middle of town, is one of the better rooms in the south-east for this kind of show - intimate enough that you hear every note, big enough to carry a full band sound. Tickets start from €15, which for two hours of this calibre of musicianship is a good night out.

What to expect

AJA’s two-hour live set covers the full sweep of Steely Dan’s catalogue - from the early FM-radio staples like Reelin’ In The Years, My Old School, and Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, through to deeper album cuts that tend to make the Steely Dan faithful very happy indeed. The eight-piece lineup allows them to honour the original arrangements properly, with brass, keys, guitars, and layered vocals all present. The band has earned endorsement from Bernard Purdie - the legendary drummer who played on the original Steely Dan recordings - who called them “the finest” tribute act he had encountered and said they “play as well or better than the Steely Dan touring groups.” That is not a small thing to have said about you. Expect a crowd that listens as much as it dances, and a room with a warm, appreciative atmosphere.

Getting there

Wexford town is straightforward to reach by road from most of Leinster. From Dublin it is around 90 minutes on the M11 and N11. From Waterford it is under an hour via the N25. Bus Eireann operates regular services from Dublin, Rosslare, and Waterford into Wexford Bus Station, which is a short walk from Cornmarket. The Arts Centre sits right in the town centre on Cornmarket, close to the main shopping streets. On-street parking is available around the quays and in the town’s car parks - Redmond Square is a reliable option a few minutes on foot.

While you’re in Wexford

Wexford town is well worth arriving early for - the medieval Selskar Abbey ruins, the long quayside walk, and a handful of good pubs all make for a pleasant few hours before showtime. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
