What to Expect

Ardrahan Farmers Market sets up every Saturday morning in the car park of St Teresa’s National School, right beside the parish church and community centre in the village. It was started by a group of local residents who wanted a regular outlet for rural producers and a social gathering point for the area, and it is still run entirely by volunteers rather than a commercial operator. Stalls rotate week to week, but regulars sell fresh fruit and vegetables, home baking, jams, honey, candles, greeting cards, fresh fish and plants grown locally. The market belongs to the Irish Farmers Markets network, the umbrella body that links smaller producer markets across the county, which keeps a baseline of quality among stallholders and means most traders are genuine small producers rather than resellers. It is a compact, low-key market rather than a tourist draw, which suits the mostly local crowd who come for the weekly shop as much as for the outing.

Getting There

Ardrahan is a small village in South Galway on the N18, roughly 30 minutes’ drive south of Galway city and about 15 minutes north of Ennis on the Clare border, on the edge of the Burren. The market car park is signposted from the village centre, next to the parish church, and there is enough space that parking is rarely an issue even at the Saturday morning peak. Local Bus Éireann services on the Galway to Ennis and Limerick route stop in the village, making it a workable option without a car.
