Every Saturday, Market Square in the centre of Athlone fills with stalls for the town’s farmers market, running from 10am to 3pm. It is one of the longer-running weekly markets in the midlands, bringing together local growers, food producers and craftspeople within walking distance of Athlone Castle and the Shannon. For a town that sits on the Westmeath and Roscommon border and pulls shoppers from both sides of the river, it is a fixed weekly date rather than an occasional event.
Expect organic vegetables, smoked fish, local honey and beeswax products, preserves, cheeses, home baking, and cut flowers and plants, mostly from producers based in Westmeath and the surrounding midlands counties. The stalls are laid out across Market Square, an easy stop for a full weekly shop or just a loaf of bread and something for lunch. Saturday trading has continued at this pitch for years under organiser Michael Casey, with a loyal base of regular stallholders rather than a rotating cast, so the mix is consistent week to week even as what’s in season changes. It sits alongside Athlone’s other Saturday activity, with the town centre, castle grounds and Shannon walks all a short stroll away, making it easy to combine a market visit with the rest of a Saturday in town.
Market Square is in Athlone town centre, on the Westmeath side of the Shannon, close to Athlone Castle and Church Street. Athlone is served by regular Bus Éireann routes and is a stop on the Dublin to Galway rail line, with the train station a short walk from the square. On-street parking and nearby car parks serve the town centre.
