Offaly County Council Heritage Week Gathering in Banagher

At Outdoor pool car park · Banagher, Co. Offaly

Banagher Heritage Week gathering

Each August, National Heritage Week gives communities across Ireland a chance to slow down and look properly at what surrounds them. This gathering in Banagher, organised by Offaly County Council, brings together local heritage groups and community organisations on the closing Friday of Heritage Week 2026 - a chance to mark the week’s theme, “Heritage at Risk”, together rather than separately. It suits anyone with a passing interest in local history, families who want something easy and outdoors, and visitors who find themselves in the Shannon midlands for the summer.

What to expect

The event takes place in the car park beside Banagher’s outdoor pool, which sits at the edge of Banagher Park on the River Shannon. The pool itself is a point of local pride - a floating open-water facility connected directly to the Shannon, long championed by the community and formally opened in April 2026. Using the adjacent car park as a gathering point puts the event right at the water’s edge and close to the harbour, which is a good instinct: it keeps things outdoors, relaxed, and with something to look at.

As a county council-led gathering rather than a single fixed programme event, expect talks, displays, or presentations from local history and heritage groups active across Offaly - the kind of informal mix that Heritage Week does well. The 2026 theme of “Heritage at Risk” means the conversation may focus on built fabric, historic landscapes, or cultural traditions that need attention. Heritage Week gatherings in smaller Irish towns tend to run in a sociable format: short contributions, a chance to ask questions, and time to meet the people who run the local history societies.

Getting there

Banagher sits on the west bank of the River Shannon, roughly 15 km south of Birr and about 20 km from Ballinasloe across the county boundary. By road, the R356 links it to Birr and the N52; from the east, the R438 comes in from Tullamore via Clara. There is no direct bus service into Banagher itself, so a car is the practical option for most visitors. Parking in the town is generally easy in the evenings, and the pool car park is the stated venue, so parking and the event are in the same spot.

While you’re in Banagher

The Shannon is the main draw here - the marina and river walks are worth an hour before or after the evening event. There is more to see in Banagher and across Co. Offaly.
