At Bere Island · Bere Island, Beara Peninsula, Co. Cork
A road race on an island with a ferry journey built into the day is not your average Saturday morning run. The Bere Island Midsummer Run brings together walkers, joggers, competitive runners, and families for a community-rooted event on one of West Cork’s most striking islands. Whether you are chasing a personal best on a measured, Athletics Ireland licensed course or taking a leisurely 5k stroll with the kids, the event caters for all levels. The island setting alone - Atlantic views, quiet roads, and genuine community warmth - makes it worth the trip.
The event runs four distances: a 5k road race, a 10k road race, a 5k walk, and an under-age fun run for younger participants. Both the 5k and 10k races are officially timed and run on a measured course licensed by Athletics Ireland, with age-category prizes for male and female finishers. The 5k race starts at 1:00 pm and the 10k follows at 1:10 pm. Entry for adult races is €20; the under-age fun run and family walk is €5. Participants receive a sponsored dry-fit t-shirt, and a post-race awards ceremony rounds off the afternoon. The race has been running for well over a decade and typically draws well over 100 participants from across West Cork, with a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere that makes first-timers feel at home.
Registration is available in advance at eventmaster.ie or on the day. Check the event’s Facebook page (@beremidsummerrun) or the westcorkislands.com calendar for confirmed 2026 details as the date approaches.
Bere Island sits off the tip of the Beara Peninsula, roughly 115 km from Cork city via the N71 to Bantry and then the R572 along the south side of the peninsula to Castletownbere. The drive from Cork takes around 90 minutes; allow a little extra time on the final stretch, which is narrow and winding. From Castletownbere, Bere Island Ferries runs a regular service to the island - the crossing takes about 15 minutes. Summer sailings are frequent, but the ferry operates on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be booked in advance, so arrive with time to spare on race morning. Check bereislandferries.com for the current summer timetable.
There is limited parking in Castletownbere near the ferry pier. Arriving early is sensible on a race day when island-bound traffic is heavier than usual.
The Beara Peninsula is one of the quieter corners of the Wild Atlantic Way and rewards a longer stay - a circuit of the Ring of Beara takes in sea cliffs, mountain roads, and a string of small towns. There is more to see in Cork and across Co. Cork.
