On the first Sunday of the month from April to October, the courtyard at BrookLodge Hotel in Macreddin Village fills for the Village Food Market, a produce and artisan food market run alongside the hotel’s own restaurants and shops. It bills itself as Ireland’s only market that charges stallholders nothing to trade, which keeps the mix of small food producers wide and changing from month to month. Live jazz plays through the afternoon, and a pig-on-the-spit and Macreddin barbecue are market fixtures, giving it more of a food-festival feel than a standard Sunday market.
Expect a genuine farm-and-artisan mix rather than imported stock: producers bring cheese, charcuterie, baked goods, preserves, fresh vegetables and prepared foods from around Wicklow and neighbouring counties, alongside street food stalls. The pig-on-the-spit and Macreddin BBQ are the market’s best known stalls, and live jazz runs for most of the afternoon, giving the courtyard a relaxed, sociable atmosphere rather than a purely functional shop. Because BrookLodge is a working hotel and resort with its own restaurants, gardens and grounds, many visitors combine the market with lunch, a walk around the village, or a longer stay. The market only operates April to October, so it follows the same rough season as most of Wicklow’s outdoor markets.
Macreddin Village is signposted off the R747 between Aughrim and Aughavannagh, around an hour’s drive south of Dublin. There is no train service to the village; the nearest stations are at Rathdrum and Arklow, both a taxi ride away. Free parking is available on site at BrookLodge.
Macreddin Village sits in the hills above Aughrim, in Wicklow countryside best known for the Vale of Avoca, Woodenbridge and the Wicklow Way. It is a small, purpose-built village built around the hotel rather than a historic settlement, so most visitors come specifically for BrookLodge itself. There is more to see across Co. Wicklow.
