Teen Girls Rock Climbing in the Burren

At The Burren · The Burren, Co. Clare

Young girl rock climbing on limestone in the Burren, Co. Clare

A half-day rock climbing session in the Burren is a genuinely different kind of Saturday afternoon. This one is aimed at teenage girls aged 13 to 18, organised by Clare Sports Partnership, and it runs on the limestone crags that make the Burren one of the most distinctive climbing landscapes in Ireland. At €10 for a three-hour guided session, it sits in the same bracket as a cinema ticket - only you come away having climbed a cliff face and knowing how to belay. It suits first-timers entirely; no experience is needed, and all safety equipment is provided.

What to expect

The session runs from 12:00pm to 3:00pm on Saturday 16 August 2026. Qualified instructors from Clare Sports Partnership lead the group on the Burren’s limestone crags - a terrain of pale grey karst that grips climbing shoes well and offers a range of challenges from gentle slabs to steeper vertical sections. You will learn the basics of movement on rock, how harnesses and ropes work, and how to read a route before you commit to it. The Burren’s limestone dries quickly even after rain, and in mid-August conditions are generally good. Because the session is girls-only, the group dynamic tends to be relaxed and supportive - participants push each other on rather than competing against each other. Wear comfortable, close-fitting clothing and bring sturdy shoes with a closed toe. Trainers work fine at beginner level; the instructors will advise on footwear when you book.

Getting there

Ennistymon is about 35 km north-west of Ennis on the N85, a straightforward drive of around 30 to 35 minutes. From Galway, follow the N18 south and pick up the N67 through Kinvara and Ballyvaughan - roughly 55 km, under an hour. The exact climbing location in the Burren will be confirmed by Clare Sports Partnership when you complete your booking, so it is worth checking the claresports.ie website for any pre-event communications. There is no direct Bus Éireann service from Ennis to the Burren crags themselves, so a car or lift is the practical option. Parking in the Burren is generally roadside and informal; follow the directions given at booking.

While you’re in Ennistymon

Ennistymon is a lively market town with a good few decent cafes and traditional pubs along its Main Street, and the Cascades on the River Inagh are worth a look just below the Falls Hotel. The Burren itself rewards a longer visit - the wildflower meadows, the Caher Valley, and Mullaghmore hill are all within easy reach of wherever the climbing takes you. There is more to see in Ennistymon and across Co. Clare.
