At Camcor River Park · Birr, Co. Offaly
A free two-hour walk through Birr’s riverside landscape, this guided loop takes you from the Camcor River Park out to Syngefield Demesne and back - with a stop at a medieval castle that archaeologists are actively excavating. It runs during National Heritage Week and is organised by Birr 2020, the community group that has spent years restoring and opening up the Camcor River corridor for public use. Anyone with an interest in local history, medieval Ireland, or simply a good evening walk will find it worthwhile.
The walk starts at the wildlife information board in Camcor River Park and follows the river banks through the town park, then along the newly maintained riverside path to Syngefield Demesne on the southern edge of Birr. The demesne is the setting for Clonoghil Castle, a medieval structure that has been the subject of ongoing archaeological research by the Irish Heritage School. The central question researchers are working to answer is whether the castle is a Hall House - dating to around the 13th or 14th century - or a Tower House, which would place it in the 1600s. Either way, visitors get a guided tour of the standing structure and the surrounding earthwork, with an archaeologist on hand to explain what has been found and why it matters.
The route returns along Syngefield Lane. The full loop is approximately 5 kilometres and takes around two hours at an easy walking pace. Ground underfoot is uneven in sections and there is no shelter or toilet facilities along the way, so come prepared.
Birr sits roughly in the centre of Ireland, about 130 km from Dublin via the M6 and N52, and around 45 km south of Tullamore. The town is well signposted from all directions. Parking is available on the main streets close to Birr town centre, and the Camcor River Park is a short walk from the central square. Bus Eireann serves Birr from Tullamore, Portumna, and Nenagh; check the Bus Eireann journey planner for the most current times, as evening service is limited.
The walk ends in good time to take a stroll around the town itself - the Georgian streetscape and the walled Birr Castle Demesne are within easy reach on foot. There is more to see in Birr and across Co. Offaly.
