Carlow Town Heritage Walk for Families

At Carlow Town Centre · Castle Hill, Carlow Town, Co. Carlow

Family walking past Carlow Castle ruins in the town

Carlow Town’s historic core is compact, walkable and genuinely worth a morning with the family. This free heritage trail takes you past some of the most interesting street-level history in the Irish Midlands - a ruined Norman castle, a landmark Gothic cathedral and an old quayside on the River Barrow - all within easy reach of each other on foot. It works well for families with children aged around eight and up who can handle an hour and a half of walking, and it costs nothing to do.

What to expect

The trail starts at Castle Hill, where the jagged remains of Carlow Castle stand behind low railings beside the meeting of the Barrow and Burren rivers. The castle was built between 1208 and 1213 by William Marshal, one of the most powerful Anglo-Norman lords of his era, and it served as a garrison and administrative centre for centuries. Its curious ruined state - just two towers and a connecting west wall - is down to a local doctor in 1814 who blew out the foundations to make room for a lunatic asylum. Information panels on site explain what happened, and children tend to find that part of the story memorable.

From the castle the trail passes through the medieval street pattern into the centre of town, taking in the Cathedral of the Assumption. Designed by Thomas Cobden in Gothic Revival style and completed in the 1830s, its octagonal belfry is hard to miss. The Barrow quays section brings you down to the river where the old canal infrastructure gives a sense of how busy the town once was as an inland port.

A self-guided trail map is available as a free download from carlowtourism.com, and guided walks typically run during the summer months on Saturday mornings - check the website for exact dates. Allow around an hour and three quarters at a relaxed pace.

Getting there

Carlow Town is roughly 90 km southwest of Dublin on the M9. By public transport, Bus Eireann runs regular services from Dublin Busaras and from Kilkenny. Carlow train station is on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line and is about a ten-minute walk from the castle. Car parking is available at the Potato Market in the town centre, a short walk from Castle Hill.

While you’re in Carlow

The town has a good few cafes and a small museum worth looking into after the walk. There is more to see in Carlow and across Co. Carlow.
