At Coppenagh House Farm · Coppenagh, Tullow, Co. Carlow, R93 FD83
One of the largest one-day agricultural shows in Ireland, the Tullow Agricultural Show has been drawing crowds to Coppenagh House Farm since 1946. Eighty years on, it still pulls over 15,000 people through the gates on the third Sunday of August. If you have an interest in livestock, horses, or the working rhythms of Irish farming, it makes for a genuinely full day out. Equally, if your knowledge of Friesian cattle is close to zero, there is plenty else: cookery demos, live music, trade stands, vintage machinery, and an atmosphere that is as much about community as competition.
The show spreads across the grounds of Coppenagh House Farm, a working beef farm outside Tullow. The livestock section covers cattle, sheep and other classes, with All-Ireland Championship Finals and Qualifiers giving the judging real weight - exhibitors travel from across the country for these. The equestrian programme runs alongside, with showjumping and pony classes, and the dog show and domestic arts section - baking, crafts, floral arrangements - round out the competitive card.
Beyond the rings, cookery demonstrations from well-known chefs give the food marquee a festival feel. There are over 50 trade and food stands to browse, vintage and classic farm machinery on display, live music and céilí dancing through the day, and children’s entertainment that keeps younger visitors occupied. The on-site coffee barn at Coppenagh is a useful stop between events.
Tullow sits on the N81, roughly 18 kilometres south-east of Carlow town. By car from Dublin, take the N9 south to Carlow and follow the N81 into Tullow - the drive is around 80 kilometres. The Coppenagh showgrounds are signposted from town and ample on-site parking is available on the day. By public transport, Local Link 800 and Bus Éireann 132 serve the Tullow area; check transportforireland.ie for Sunday timetables. The showground is a short walk or taxi ride from the town centre.
Tullow is a market town on the River Slaney with a few good cafés and a lively main street. The surrounding Carlow countryside rewards a slow drive if you have time after the show. There is more to see in Tullow and across Co. Carlow.
