At Show Grounds · Carnew, Co. Wicklow
The Carnew & District Agricultural Show has been running since 1944, making it one of the longer-established agricultural shows in Leinster. Held each year on the third Saturday of July at the showgrounds in Umrigar on the edge of Carnew, it draws farming families, horse enthusiasts, craftspeople and curious day-trippers from across south Wicklow, Wexford and Carlow. Admission is free, the atmosphere is easy-going, and a full day passes quickly.
The show runs across several rings and display areas. The horse classes are the centrepiece - brood mares and foals, young horses, Irish Draught, working hunter, ponies, and carriage driving all feature, so there is genuine variety for anyone who follows equine competition. Sheep, poultry, and a pets section (dogs and cats) fill out the livestock side of things.
Away from the rings, the home industries and arts and crafts marquee is worth a slow walk-through: entries cover baking, preserves, needlework, and photography, and the standard is consistently high from a community that takes these classes seriously. The horticulture and flowers section draws its own loyal crowd, especially when the summer has been warm. A range of trade stands runs alongside the rings throughout the day, covering agricultural suppliers, food and craft sellers.
The show is affiliated with the Irish Shows Association and competes within the Eastern Region, so classes attract entrants from well beyond the immediate area. For queries in advance, the show secretary can be reached at carnewagriculturalshow@gmail.com or 087 721 2876.
Carnew sits in the south of County Wicklow, close to the Wexford and Carlow borders, on the R725. From Dublin, take the M11/N11 south past Arklow, then pick up the R747 west through Gorey and Carnew is roughly 90 minutes from the capital. From Carlow town, it is under 30 minutes via the R725 north.
There is no direct rail link to Carnew; the nearest train station is Arklow on the Dublin-Rosslare line. Bus Eireann serves the Carnew area on the Wexford to Dublin route, but services are limited, so most visitors drive. Parking at agricultural shows of this size is typically in adjacent fields - flat shoes and an eye on the weather are advised.
The village itself has a few pubs and a quiet main street worth a stop after the show. South Wicklow is underrated walking country, with the Wicklow Way passing not far to the north. There is more to see in Carnew and across Co. Wicklow.
