The Centre for Irish-German Studies at the University of Limerick runs a free German-language Stammtisch at Sexton’s Bar on Henry Street on the first Monday of every month, with the next sitting on Monday, 7 September 2026 at 8pm. A stammtisch, literally a regulars’ table, is a long-standing German tradition of an informal, no-agenda meetup over drinks, and Limerick’s version has been folded into the city’s programme of events marking Ireland’s EU Council Presidency in 2026.
There is no class structure and no fee: anyone with an interest in German, from fluent speakers to complete beginners, is welcome to pull up a seat and join the conversation. CIGS staff and students from the university’s German programme usually anchor the table, but the group is open to the wider public, including German nationals living in Limerick and anyone who studied the language at school and wants to dust it off. The evening runs as a normal night at the pub rather than a formal event, with conversation moving between English and German depending on who is at the table. It sits within Limerick’s wider EU Presidency programme for 2026, which pairs the city with Germany for a year of cultural and educational events, alongside things like the German art trail and the German collection at the city gallery.
Henry Street runs through Limerick city centre, within walking distance of O’Connell Street and the Milk Market, and is well served by local bus routes and nearby car parks.
