Willie Clancy Summer School - Nightly Ceili and Sessions

At Mill Marquee, GAA Grounds · GAA Grounds, Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare

Traditional Irish music session

Each evening from 4 to 12 July 2026, the Mill Marquee at Miltown Malbay’s GAA Grounds becomes the centre of one of Ireland’s finest traditional music weeks. The Willie Clancy Summer School - Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy in Irish - draws nearly 1,000 students and thousands more visitors to this small Clare town every summer, and the nightly céilí is the beating heart of it all. If you have ever wanted to see proper céilí and set dancing done at full tilt, to live music from some of the best bands in the country, this is the week to come.

What to expect

The céilís run from 9:30pm to 1am inside the Mill Marquee. Throughout the week, named céilí bands take the floor in turn - the Kilfenora Céilí Band, the Tulla Céilí Band, the Brian Ború Céilí Band, Dal gCais, Taylor’s Cross, and others. The dancing is open to all levels; the crowd mixes seasoned set dancers with curious first-timers and visiting musicians who have come for the daytime classes. Inside the marquee the atmosphere is warm and loud in the best way. The school - founded in 1973 as a tribute to the great Miltown Malbay uilleann piper Willie Clancy - is now the world’s largest traditional music summer school, and the quality of what you hear reflects that. Beyond the official programme, the town’s pubs fill from around 9pm each night with spontaneous sessions. These are free to wander into and the standard is extraordinarily high.

Getting there

Miltown Malbay sits on the Wild Atlantic Way in west Clare, roughly 40km south-west of Ennis on the N68. By car from Limerick, allow around an hour via the M18 and N18 to Ennis, then west on the N68. From Galway, the drive takes about 90 minutes. Bus Eireann runs services from Ennis to Miltown Malbay; check the Bus Eireann website for current timetables. During the school week the town is exceptionally busy and parking close to the centre fills quickly - arriving early or using any available park-and-walk options will save time.

While you’re in Miltown Malbay

The town itself is a good base for exploring the west Clare coast, with Spanish Point beach a short drive away and the Cliffs of Moher within easy reach. There is more to see in Miltown Malbay and across Co. Clare.
