Hester’s Golden Eagle has been a fixture on Main Street in Castlerea since 1966, when Frank and Marie Hester first opened its doors. Six decades on, the place is still in the family - now run by Ollie and Breege - and it carries the kind of easy, lived-in confidence you only get from somewhere that has never needed to try too hard. An evening out here is the real thing: proper bar, proper food, proper company.
The Golden Eagle is a bar and restaurant under one roof, so the night can go as far as you want to take it. The restaurant side is well regarded across west Roscommon - the kitchen turns out generous, unfussy food, and the value is consistently praised. Later in the evening the bar comes into its own: a comfortable, welcoming space that draws a good local crowd. The venue has a long track record of hosting gatherings - birthday nights, hen and stag parties, family celebrations - and the staff are used to looking after groups as well as couples or friends coming in on the fly. Castlerea sits on the N60, roughly midway between Roscommon town (about 25 km to the north-east) and Claremorris in Co. Mayo. From Dublin it is a straightforward drive west on the M4/N5 - allow around two and a half hours. Bus Eireann operates services on the Westport/Athlone corridor that call at Castlerea, so the town is reachable by public transport without a car. The venue is on Main Street in the centre of town, and street parking is available in the immediate area.
