American college football comes to Dublin on 29 August 2026 when TCU Horned Frogs take on the University of North Carolina Tar Heels at the Aviva Stadium. This is a genuinely rare occasion - the first time either programme has played internationally, and only the fifth time these two sides have met, the first since 1940. UNC arrive under Bill Belichick, fresh from eight Super Bowl victories with the New England Patriots. The spectacle and novelty make it worth attending even if you have never watched a down of the game.
The Aviva is adapted for American football, bringing capacity to around 48,000. The ground will be heavily populated by travelling US fans, many making a first trip to Ireland, and that mix of local curiosity and American sporting passion creates something unlike a standard rugby or soccer matchday.
The game runs in four quarters rather than two halves - stoppages are filled with marching bands, cheer squads, and sideline entertainment. TCU are a two-time national champion who reached the College Football National Championship in 2023. Expect colour, noise, and a long afternoon.

The stadium is on Lansdowne Road, Dublin 4. The DART is the easiest option - Lansdowne Road station is a two-minute walk from the main entrance, with trains from Connolly, Tara Street, and Pearse Street. Dublin Bus routes 4, 7, 8, and 18 also stop nearby. There is no parking at the stadium; surrounding streets close to cars for several hours before and after major events. Pre-booked spaces at Q-Park Grand Canal Square are the most practical option if driving. Walking from the city centre takes around 25 minutes.
