Cork BHAA ThermoFisher Scientific 4 Mile Road Race

At Ringaskiddy area · Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork

Runners at the Cork BHAA ThermoFisher race

The Cork BHAA ThermoFisher Scientific 4 Mile Road Race is one of the summer fixtures that working runners in Cork look forward to most. Organised by the Cork Business House Athletics Association - a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation that has been running events in Cork for over 40 years - this Wednesday evening race draws a good crowd of club and company runners out to the south harbour road. With around 200 to 300 finishers in recent years and a reputation as “a great running course,” it is the kind of race where seasoned club athletes and first-timers alike will feel at home. The entry is deliberately low cost because all proceeds go straight back into making the races better.

What to expect

The race covers four miles on roads in the Ringaskiddy area, starting at 8pm - late enough that the worst of the evening heat has passed and the harbour air gives the route a welcome freshness. As part of the Cork BHAA Summer League, results feed into a points table, so there is an extra layer of competition for registered Athletics Ireland members running for their company teams. That said, you do not need to be on a team or a BHAA member to take part. Non-registered runners are welcome at the slightly higher entry price. The format is no-frills road racing: turn up, register if you haven’t already, pin on your number and run. The finish-line atmosphere is sociable; this is a working community of runners who know each other, and post-race chat tends to linger. Check the Cork BHAA website for the precise start location in Ringaskiddy - it can shift slightly year to year.

Getting there

Ringaskiddy is about 15 kilometres south of Cork city, out along the N28. By car, take the N28 from the South Ring Road and follow signs for Ringaskiddy - the drive from the city takes around 20 minutes. Public transport is limited to this part of the harbour, so most runners drive or arrange a lift. Parking is generally available in the industrial village but spaces fill quickly before an evening race, so arrive early.

While you’re in Ringaskiddy

The village sits right on Cork Harbour and has a different character to most of the county - a working port, a Martello tower on the hill above Loughbeg, and views across the water to Spike Island. There is more to see in Ringaskiddy and across Co. Cork.
