At Visit Derry Tourist Information Centre (meeting point) · 1-3 Waterloo Place, Derry BT48 6HH
A three-hour stroll through Derry’s historic walled city that puts the people behind the food front and centre - this is the kind of tour that feels nothing like a tour. Derry by Fork has built a reputation for pairing proper tastings with the kind of local storytelling you simply would not get wandering in on your own. It suits anyone with a genuine interest in independent food businesses, good espresso, Italian charcuterie, or the answer to the question of who pours the best Guinness inside the walls.
The Walled City Food Tour runs from 2:30pm to 5:30pm, covering roughly half a kilometre at a comfortable pace through Derry city centre. You visit six independently run stops, all chosen to reflect the range of what this city does well right now.
The tour begins at Terra Bakehouse on Waterloo Street, where you pick up espresso and artisan treats before heading deeper into the walls. Walled City Fudge follows - handmade confectionery that is hard to walk past at any speed. Salumeria Mariuccia brings you into authentic Italian territory: charcuterie, aged cheeses, and the story of how a continental deli found its home in the north-west of Ireland. YUM Cakes is another stop, making the case for Derry’s baking credentials. The tour closes at O’Loughlin’s Irish House, where you learn to pour your own pint and, on many dates, there is live music to round the afternoon off properly.
All food, drinks, and entry fees are included in the ticket price. Groups are kept deliberately small. Guides hold OCN Level 2 accreditation and know the city from the inside out - the founder, Emily McCorkell, was named Derry’s Local Food Hero 2024 and co-chairs the LegenDerry Food Network.
Meet at the front doors of the Visit Derry Tourist Information Centre, 1-3 Waterloo Place, right in the city centre. Derry is well connected by road from Belfast (about an hour on the A6) and from Dublin (about two and a half hours via the M1 and A5). Translink operates regular coach services from Belfast Europa Bus Centre and Bus Eireann runs from Dublin. Foyle Metro city buses cover the local network. Parking is available in several multi-storey car parks in the city centre, including the Foyleside and Quayside centres a short walk from Waterloo Place.
A Saturday afternoon food tour leaves the rest of the day open. The city walls themselves - the best-preserved in Ireland - take less than an hour to circuit and give a good sweep of the city and the Foyle. The Bogside murals are a ten-minute walk from the walls. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
