The Derry Ladies Gaelic Football Association county club championship is one of the most keenly contested competitions in Ulster women’s football, running from summer right through to the county finals in October. Three grades - senior, intermediate and junior - run in parallel, meaning there are clubs of every level competing for county glory across dozens of fixtures. If you have any interest in ladies Gaelic football, following this championship gives you a real sense of community-level sport at its most committed.
Fixtures are spread across club grounds throughout County Derry from August onwards, with the biggest games - particularly the senior county final - typically played at Owenbeg, Derry GAA’s Centre of Excellence in Dungiven. Owenbeg is a substantial facility: a 48-acre complex with a 2,000-seat stand, multiple grass pitches and a 4G surface, giving county finals a proper occasion feel even at club level. Club grounds, by contrast, are local and often atmospheric - small stands, loyal followings, and the kind of sharp rivalry that only neighbours playing each other can produce.
Senior grade winners go on to represent Derry in the Ulster Senior Club Championship, which adds real stakes to the county decider. Intermediate and junior club winners have their own provincial pathways. The full run of fixtures is posted on the Derry LGFA website at derrylgfa.com as the season progresses, so it is worth checking there for specific dates, venues and round draws.
Most fixtures take place at club grounds scattered across the county - from the north Derry coast to the Sperrins. The county town of Derry city sits in the north-west corner and is well connected: the A6 links it to Belfast in around 75 minutes, while the A5 runs south towards Monaghan and Dublin. Regular Bus Eireann and Translink services connect Derry to other towns. For Owenbeg in Dungiven, it is roughly a 30-minute drive from Derry city on the A6; local parking is available on site. For club-ground fixtures, check the specific venue in advance as rural grounds may have limited facilities.
Derry city is worth a few hours around any match day - the Bogside murals, the city walls, and the Peace Bridge are all within easy reach of the centre. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
