At Millennium Forum · Newmarket Street, Derry, Co. Derry
James Arthur brings his Pisces Tour to Derry on a late August Friday evening, playing Ebrington Square on the banks of the River Foyle. This is a proper outdoor show from one of the UK’s most consistent chart acts - a singer who has racked up 11 UK Platinum singles since winning The X Factor in 2012 and who now commands upwards of 38 million monthly listeners on Spotify. If you missed his arena run earlier in the year, this open-air date is the one to catch.
Arthur is touring behind Pisces, his sixth studio album, which takes a more personal and reflective turn than anything he has put out before. The record draws on his ADHD diagnosis, fatherhood, and a period of real self-examination, and pulls in touches of Americana, rock, and indie alongside the pop balladry he is known for. The lead single “ADHD” is a standout - a stirring, slow-building piece that lands very differently live.
There is no support act on this tour. Arthur plays for well over two hours, which means you get a full run through the catalogue - “Say You Won’t Let Go”, “Empty Space”, “Car’s Outside”, “Rewrite The Stars”, “Naked”, and a generous chunk of the new material. He is a strong live performer, and the combination of a big open sky and a crowd who know every word makes outdoor shows like this one particularly good value.
Ebrington Square itself adds something. The former British Army barracks, now a regenerated public square, sits directly across the River Foyle from the old city walls, and the setting on a clear August night is hard to beat. Doors open at 6:00pm; plan to arrive early to settle in and catch the atmosphere before the lights go down.
Derry is straightforward to reach by road. From Dublin, it is roughly two and a half hours on the M1 and A5. From Belfast, the A6 brings you in under an hour and a half. Ebrington Square sits on the east bank of the Foyle, across the Peace Bridge from the city centre, and there is car parking on site and nearby, though outdoor shows fill fast - arriving early avoids the scramble. Translink operates trains and buses from Belfast to Derry (Great Victoria Street to Derry/Londonderry station), and local buses run across the Craigavon Bridge to Ebrington.
Derry rewards an overnight stay. The walled city is the only remaining complete example of walled fortifications in Ireland, the Bogside murals are a short walk from the centre, and the food and pub scene on Shipquay Street and Waterloo Street has come on considerably in recent years. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
