At Derry Rowing Club - Foyle Embankment · Foyle Embankment, Derry, BT47 6FA
Rowing on the River Foyle is one of the great sporting sights in the north-west of Ireland, and the annual summer regatta organised by Derry Rowing Club is the day it all comes together. Crews travel from clubs across Northern Ireland and the Republic to race on a stretch of river that has hosted competitive rowing for well over a century. It is a free, open-air event with a genuine club-sport atmosphere - competitive enough at the front of the field, relaxed and welcoming along the bank. Families, rowing supporters, and casual passers-by all find a reason to stop and watch.
Racing gets under way at 10am and runs through the day in a series of heats and finals. The programme covers a broad range of boat classes - eights, fours, and doubles - with separate events for men, women, juniors, masters, and club crews. That breadth means the racing rarely stops for long and there is always something moving on the water.
Spectators line the Foyle Embankment on the Waterside (east bank), where the finish line and the club facilities are located. Views along the course are clear and unobstructed. Refreshments are on hand at the club throughout the day, so there is no need to leave the river for long. The atmosphere is community-led rather than ticketed-event - a proper club day rather than a commercial spectacle, and better for it.
Derry sits at the top of the north-west, roughly an hour and twenty minutes by road from Belfast on the A6, and about two and a half hours from Dublin via the M1 and A5. Translink operates Goldline coach services from Belfast Europa Bus Centre direct to Derry, and the train from Belfast Central runs to Derry station on Great James Street with several departures daily.
Derry Rowing Club is on the east bank of the Foyle at Foyle Embankment, BT47 6FA - the Waterside side of the river, accessible off the main road running south from the Craigavon Bridge. On-street parking is available along the embankment on a Saturday. Ebrington Square, about a kilometre north on foot along the waterfront, is served by the frequent Park and Ride buses from the city.
July is a good time to be in Derry. The city’s walled old town, the Peace Bridge, and the Bogside murals are all within easy walking distance of the city centre. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
