Derry Senior Hurling Championship - Semi-Finals

At Owenbeg Centre of Excellence · Owenbeg, Dungiven, Co. Derry

Derry senior club hurling semi-final action at Owenbeg

The weekend of 20-21 September 2026 brings two of the year’s most competitive club hurling fixtures to Owenbeg, when the top sides from each group in the Derry Senior Hurling Championship meet in cross-group semi-finals. This is the stage where the championship genuinely sharpens up - the group winners arrive on form, the tension is real, and there is a final place on the line. For anyone who follows Derry club hurling, it is one of the better occasions of the year: short, high-stakes, played at a proper county venue with the final already set for 5 October.

What to expect

Slaughtneil, who have dominated the Derry Senior Hurling Championship for well over a decade with thirteen successive county titles, are perennial contenders again in 2026. Kevin Lynch’s from Dungiven, Ballinascreen and Swatragh provide the main challenge, and the cross-group format means the draw throws together sides who may not have met in the group stage. Semi-final days at Owenbeg typically run two fixtures across the weekend - adult senior and sometimes a supporting curtain-raiser - so it is worth checking the exact programme on derrygaa.ie as fixtures are confirmed closer to the date. Entry is priced at GBP 10 for adults.

Getting there

Owenbeg Centre of Excellence sits on the outskirts of Dungiven, roughly 25 kilometres south of Derry city along the A6. From Derry, it is a straightforward 25-minute drive down the Dungiven Road. From Belfast, take the M22/A6 westbound through Maghera and continue towards Dungiven - allow around an hour. Free car parking is available on site on matchdays, with overflow parking along the Foreglen Road if the main car park fills. Translink buses serve Dungiven from Derry, though the stop is around a 30-minute walk from the ground, so driving or car-sharing is more practical for most people.

While you’re in Dungiven

Dungiven itself is a compact market town with a solid GAA tradition - Kevin Lynch’s, one of the county’s most respected hurling clubs, are based here. The town sits in the Roe Valley, with the ruins of Dungiven Priory and an Augustinian monastery close to the centre. There is more to see in Dungiven and across Co. Derry.
