Derry Senior Football Championship - Round 1 at Owenbeg

At Owenbeg Centre of Excellence · Owenbeg, Dungiven, Co. Derry

Derry SFC club football championship action at Owenbeg

The Derry Senior Football Championship is the most fiercely contested club competition in the county, and Round 1 packs an extraordinary amount of football into a single weekend. Across Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 August 2026, seven first-round ties involving all 16 senior clubs take place at Owenbeg Centre of Excellence outside Dungiven. For anyone who follows club GAA in the north, this is as good as it gets - rival parishes settling scores, tight local grudge matches, and the added edge of a backdoor format that keeps every club alive for at least two games.

What to expect

The weekend opens on Saturday with four ties. Swatragh face Loup at 1pm, followed by Steelstown v Faughanvale at 2:45pm, Slaughtneil v Kilrea at 5:30pm, and Magherafelt v Ballinascreen at 7:15pm. Sunday brings three more: Banagher v Glen at 1pm, Ballinderry v Bellaghy at 2:45pm, and the local interest tie Newbridge v Dungiven at 4:30pm.

The format rewards persistence. Round 1 winners go into Round 2A against other winners; losers drop into Round 2B against other losers. That means a defeat on Saturday or Sunday is not the end - every club is guaranteed a second game on 30-31 August. Quarter-finals follow on 27-28 September.

The venue itself is worth the trip. Owenbeg is Derry GAA’s 48-acre Centre of Excellence, built in phases from 2011. The main stand holds around 2,000 spectators and the facility includes full canteen and catering, so you can settle in for the afternoon rather than just catching one match and leaving.

Getting there

Owenbeg is on the southern edge of Dungiven, roughly 25km south of Derry city along the A6. Coming from Belfast, take the A6 west from Dungannon through Maghera and on to Dungiven - the entrance to the centre is well signposted off the main road. There is ample on-site car parking. Bus connections to Dungiven are limited on weekends, so driving or arranging a lift is the practical option for most people.

While you’re in Dungiven

Dungiven is a compact market town in the Roe Valley with a strong GAA tradition and some fine walking country nearby in the Sperrins. Grab something in the town before the evening kick-offs - it is a short drive from Owenbeg. There is more to see in Dungiven and across Co. Derry.
