At Derry Squash Club · Derry Squash Club, Strand Road, Derry, BT48 7AF
The Derry Squash Championship is one of the highlights of the local squash calendar - a full day of competitive singles play that draws club members and visiting players from across the north-west. If you play squash at any level, from social weekend games to regular competition, there is a division here that suits you. Spectators are welcome too, particularly for the semi-finals and finals in the afternoon, when the quality of play makes for genuinely good watching.
The tournament runs from 9:00am and fills the day. Players are entered into one of three divisions - A for competitive players, B for intermediates, and C for social players - with seeding based on current rankings. Matches are knockout singles, best-of-five games to 11 points, the standard format used across Irish and Ulster squash competitions. With four courts running concurrently, there is always a match to watch somewhere in the building.
The club hosts men’s and women’s competitions, and all four courts are in use throughout the day to keep the draw moving. Trophies and prizes are awarded to division winners. Pre-entry is required by 29 August 2026 - registration on the day is not available - so check the Derry Squash Club website and get your name in before the deadline. Light refreshments and a café are available on-site, which matters on a full day of play.
Derry Squash Club sits on Strand Road, close to the waterfront and about a kilometre from the city centre - a fifteen-minute walk or a short taxi ride. By car, Derry is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Belfast via the A6 and around 1 hour 20 minutes from Dublin via the M1 and A5. Bus Éireann and Translink both serve Derry, with Derry bus station a short walk from Strand Road. Parking is available at the club and on nearby streets.
September is a good time to be in Derry - the summer crowds have thinned, the days are still long enough, and the walled city has real character. The Bogside murals, the city walls, and the Guild Hall are all within easy reach of the club. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
