At Croagh Patrick · Croagh Patrick, County Mayo
Reek Sunday, held on the last Sunday of July each year, draws over 25,000 pilgrims to climb Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holiest mountain. Pilgrims ascend the 764-metre peak, many barefoot as an act of devotion, following the tradition established by Saint Patrick who fasted for forty days on the mountain’s summit in 441 AD. Masses and services are held at the mountain’s chapel at the summit.
Croagh Patrick is located near Westport, County Mayo, approximately 2 hours’ drive from Bangor. Coach trips are often organised by parishes in Down and Connor Diocese. Car parking available at the mountain’s visitor centre (small charge).
