Drumgath open their Morgan Fuels Senior Football Championship campaign against the club that has dominated Down football for well over a decade. Kilcoo go into round one as reigning county champions and arrive at Mayobridge on Sunday 23 August 2026 as firm favourites. For Drumgath, a small club based just outside Rathfriland, it is the kind of draw that pulls in support well beyond their own parish, a first-round test against the county’s benchmark team rather than a meeting saved for the closing rounds.
Kilcoo’s recent record needs little introduction in County Down. The Páirc Eoghan Rua club have been county champions in thirteen of the last fourteen seasons, missing out only in 2018, and added an Ulster club title and the 2022 All-Ireland club final against Kilmacud Crokes to that run, won on a late Jerome Johnston goal. Manager Conor Laverty has kept them at or near the top of the county ever since. Drumgath are the kind of side this fixture format is built for: a chance to measure themselves against the county’s dominant force early in the campaign, on home turf, rather than only in theory. Expect a physical, high-tempo match, Kilcoo’s experienced forward line against a Drumgath side with nothing to lose and a home crowd behind them.
