Halloween Storytelling for Families - Newry and Mourne Museum

At Newry and Mourne Museum, Bagenal's Castle · Castle Street, Newry, Co. Down

A storyteller reading to a group of children in a historic castle room

Newry and Mourne Museum at Bagenal’s Castle marks Halloween with a family storytelling session on Saturday, 31 October 2026, priced at £2 per ticket. Storyteller Janice Witherspoon takes over the museum for tales of “strange goings on, witches, ghosts, and all sorts of fairy folk,” aimed at families visiting the city centre museum over the Halloween weekend.

What to expect

The session is built around traditional storytelling rather than a scripted performance: Janice Witherspoon, a well-known figure on the Irish storytelling circuit, works through folk tales in a format suited to children and their parents together. It runs inside Bagenal’s Castle, the 16th-century merchant’s house at the heart of the museum, giving the stories a suitably atmospheric setting on Halloween itself. Tickets are £2 each, and exact timings were still being finalised at the time of writing, so anyone wanting to attend should contact the museum directly to confirm the start time and check availability before travelling. The event sits alongside the museum’s regular free exhibitions, including its current display on Newry’s history as a trading centre, so families can combine the storytelling with a look around the rest of the museum on the same visit.

Getting there

Bagenal’s Castle is on Castle Street in Newry city centre, close to the Newry Canal and a short walk from the main Hill Street and Monaghan Street shopping area. Newry has frequent bus links from Belfast, Dublin and the surrounding towns, and there is public parking nearby.

While you’re in Newry

Newry grew up around its canal and cathedral, the city straddling the old border between Down and Armagh at the head of Carlingford Lough. There is more to see in Newry and across Co. Down.
