At Newcastle Promenade · Newcastle, Co. Down
The Sea2Sky is one of the best-loved running events on the northern coast of Ireland - a race that starts at the sea, climbs into the sky, and delivers views that make the burning legs worth every step. Now in its 13th year, this annual fixture organised by Born2Run Events draws runners of all levels to Newcastle on a July evening, offering both a 10K and a 5K option across a genuinely exciting mixed-terrain course through the foothills of the Mourne Mountains. If you have been looking for a race with a bit more character than a flat road loop, this is it.
The 10K begins on Newcastle Promenade and immediately sets the tone, rolling through a mix of road and track before the course heads off-road into the foothills of the Mournes. The climb is gradual rather than brutal, but you will know you are gaining height. At the 5K mark, the trail opens up to sweeping views back over Newcastle and the coast - the kind of panorama that stops you for a second even when you are racing. The descent brings you back to the promenade finish.
The 5K starts from Donard Forest itself, which means the forest start is a 15-minute walk from registration - allow time for this. Both race distances use individual chip timing. There is also a 10K Walk option for those who prefer to take it at their own pace.
Every finisher gets a Sea2Sky medal. Chip timing covers both race distances. After the finish, all participants are invited to a complimentary post-race BBQ - a proper community touch that makes the event feel like more than just a race.
Start times are staggered across the evening: the 10K Walk goes at 6:30 PM, with the 5K and 10K races both setting off at 7:30 PM.
Newcastle sits at the foot of Slieve Donard, roughly 50km south of Belfast on the Co. Down coast. By car, take the A24 south from Belfast through Ballynahinch - it is a straightforward drive of around 45 minutes to an hour. From Dublin, the M1 north to Newry and then the A2 coastal road is the most scenic approach.
Free parking is available at Donard Car Park on Downs Road, and additional parking on Causeway Road. The town is manageable on foot from the car parks to the promenade start. There is no direct train service to Newcastle; the nearest rail station is Newry, from where you would need a bus or taxi.
Newcastle is the gateway town to the Mourne Mountains and the starting point for the ascent of Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland’s highest peak. The Blue Flag beach runs alongside the promenade where the race starts and finishes. There is more to see in Newcastle and across Co. Down.
