One of the longest-running free festivals in Ireland, the Dún Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures brings together music, food, dance and arts from across the globe for a full weekend on the seafront. Running since the early 2000s, it has grown into Ireland’s largest intercultural celebration, drawing well over 250,000 people across its two days. The setting alone is half the appeal - the open seafront promenade becomes a festival ground, with sea air, the piers in the background, and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere that makes it easy to dip in and out across the day.
The festival spreads performances and activity right across the seafront and town, making it feel more like a neighbourhood takeover than a single-stage event. Expect a mix of outdoor concerts covering world music from Africa, Latin America, Asia and beyond, alongside street performances, dance showcases, craft markets and food stalls serving cuisines you would not find anywhere else in the county. In past years the programme has included a Global Village, world dance plazas, and workshops where you can try instruments or pick up a few steps of unfamiliar styles. Hundreds of musicians and performers have appeared across multiple stages and spaces, from the main seafront road to smaller spots tucked into the town. The road is closed to traffic for the weekend, so it is safe and easy to move around with children. Keep an eye on the official programme when it is released closer to the date - headliner concerts tend to sell out quickly even when admission is free.
Dún Laoghaire is about 12 km south of Dublin city centre on the bay. The DART is the straightforward choice - Dún Laoghaire station is right in the town and trains run from Connolly, Tara Street and Pearse stations roughly every 15 minutes. The journey takes around 25-30 minutes from the city centre. Several Dublin Bus routes also serve the town from the south city including the 7, 7A and 46A, with a journey of around 40-45 minutes. If you are driving from outside Dublin, the M50 and N11 lead south towards the coast, but parking in town on a busy festival weekend is limited - using the DART or a park-and-ride at a surrounding suburb is a safer bet.
The piers are a short walk from the seafront and worth the stroll - East Pier in particular is a well-worn local tradition for an evening walk.
