Andrew Johnston, who works under the banner Alternative Ulstours and describes himself as a dark historian, brings his Halloween storytelling show to Ardhowen Theatre on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Eerieland is a spoken-word performance rather than a play with a cast, built around a run of supposedly true ghost stories collected from across Northern Ireland and the border counties. It runs late, at 9pm, in keeping with the material.
Johnston structures the show as what he calls a virtual road trip, moving from location to location and unleashing what the venue’s own description calls nightmarish lore. The stories on the bill include a violent poltergeist that plagued a helpless family, a mansion said to be cursed by Egyptian mummies, a remote farmhouse where two exorcisms reportedly failed, a tragic spirit that escaped a priest’s trap to haunt a hotel, and a stately home where a phantom is said to have fulfilled a spectral pact with a fiery touch. The format leans on Johnston’s delivery and research rather than staging or special effects, closer to a lecture-hall ghost tour than conventional theatre, which is why it sits in the Ardhowen’s autumn programme alongside its drama and musical shows rather than under music. The theatre’s Gallery Bar, where the show is often introduced from, is restricted to those 18 and over, giving a sense of the tone. It is a one-night booking, not a run.
Ardhowen Theatre is on the Dublin Road on the edge of Enniskillen, beside Lough Erne, with parking on site. From Belfast it is roughly 90 minutes via the A4 through Dungannon; from Dublin, around two hours via the N3 through Cavan and Belturbet. Bus services serve Enniskillen town centre, a short taxi ride from the theatre.
