At Lees Road Sport and Amenity Park · Lees Road, Ennis, Co. Clare
The Ennis Track Athletic Club 10K at Lees Road is a well-established summer road race that draws runners from across Clare and beyond each July. Organised by Ennis Track AC, one of the county’s most active athletics clubs, it doubles as a family morning out - the Kids 2K Forest Run kicks off at 9:30am, so parents with young runners can get them to the start line before lining up for the main event themselves. With tea and refreshments laid on afterwards, it has the easy, social feel of a club race rather than a faceless mass-participation event.
The adult 10K starts at 10:00am, with the course running on roads in and around the Lees Road complex. The venue - formally John O’Sullivan Park - is a 134-acre woodland and parkland sports campus about 1.5km from Ennis town centre. It holds an athletics track, cross country trails, all-weather pitches and woodland walking paths, and is in the middle of a €1.3 million upgrade that will bring its athletics track to international competition standard. Races here have a distinctive character: you are running through genuinely green, wooded surroundings rather than pounding a town-centre loop. The Kids 2K is billed as a forest run, so younger participants get a proper cross-country flavour. Entry is from €10, and medals are awarded. All proceeds go back into Ennis Track AC for equipment and athlete development.
Ennis sits at the junction of the N18 (from Limerick and Galway) and the N85, making it straightforward to reach by car from most of Munster and Connacht. The nearest rail station is Ennis, on the Limerick - Galway line, about 15 minutes’ walk or a short taxi from the park. Bus Eireann serves the town from Limerick, Galway and Shannon. Lees Road Sport and Amenity Park has ample car and coach parking on site, so arriving by car is uncomplicated on a Friday morning outside the school-run peak.
Ennis is worth a couple of hours after the race - the market square, the 13th-century Ennis Friary and a string of traditional music pubs are all within easy walking of each other. There is more to see in Ennis and across Co. Clare.
