At Melvin Studios · Post Office, Garrison, Co. Fermanagh
A summer arts and crafts workshop for primary school children, run by Garrison Community Group at Melvin Studios just off the main street in Garrison village. Led by Jane and Dom, the morning sessions are aimed at P1 to P7 pupils and give kids a proper two-hour stretch to make things, try different materials, and leave with actual artwork rather than a half-finished project. For parents with school-age children to keep occupied during August, it is the sort of local activity that fills a morning well without a long drive or a large price tag relative to commercial camps.
The sessions run from 10:30am to 12:30pm, giving two full hours of creative work. Jane and Dom lead the group through a mix of arts and crafting activities suited to the P1-P7 age range, so younger and older primary pupils can take part together. The setting is The Hub at the Post Office on Main Street in Garrison - a community space rather than a commercial art school, which tends to keep things relaxed and genuinely child-friendly. The programme runs across three days (Monday 3rd to Wednesday 5th August) and there is also an afternoon session available separately if you want to book both halves of the day. Tickets are available through Eventbrite and the organiser offers refunds up to seven days before the event.
Garrison sits on the southern shore of Lough Melvin, close to the Leitrim border, on the R282 road linking Belcoo and Belleek. From Enniskillen, the most direct route is the A4 west to Belcoo, then south-west on the B52 and across into Garrison - roughly 40 minutes. From Sligo or Manorhamilton on the southern side, the R280 north through Rossinver brings you to Garrison in under half an hour. There is no regular bus service to Garrison, so a car is the practical option for most families. Parking in the village is informal and generally straightforward along the main street.
The village sits right on Lough Melvin, one of the few lakes in Ireland with its own distinct species of trout - the gillaroo and sonaghan - so it draws anglers from across the country. Roogagh Waterfall is a short walk from the village through woodland and along the river, worth a quick look after the morning session if the weather holds. There is more to see in Garrison and across Co. Fermanagh.
