At Rossinver · Rossinver, Co. Fermanagh F91 EK29
Every summer, the shores of Lough Melvin come alive with children learning to swim and families picking up skills that matter long after the holidays are over. Rossinver Water Safety runs these free Swim and Safety Weeks as a community programme, drawing on the same model that Water Safety Ireland supports at lakes across the island. If your children are not yet confident in the water - or if you want them to grow up knowing how to read a lake and react in an emergency - this is the kind of week that makes a real difference. It suits all ages and abilities, and being free of charge means there is no barrier to joining in.
The week combines practical swimming instruction with water safety education, both taught by trained instructors. Children learn to swim at their own level while also picking up skills like self-rescue techniques, how to help someone in difficulty without putting yourself at risk, and how to respect open water. Sessions at Lough Melvin are run on the lake itself, which has a gradual sandy shoreline and good water quality - conditions that make it one of the more forgiving places to learn outdoor swimming in the north-west. The programme is run by local volunteers who know the lough well, and it tends to have a relaxed, community feel. Bring a towel, a swimsuit, and a change of clothes. Starting at 8am means the water is at its calmest before any wind picks up.
Rossinver is a small village on the southern shore of Lough Melvin, about 39 kilometres south-west of Enniskillen via the A4 and then south through Belleek and into Co. Leitrim. From Enniskillen, allow around 45 minutes by car. The village sits right on the Fermanagh/Leitrim border, so depending on where you are coming from, you may approach from the Republic side via Manorhamilton or Kinlough. There is no regular public transport to Rossinver; a car is the practical option. Parking near the lough shore is informal but there is generally space for a reasonable number of vehicles.
The drive from Enniskillen through south Fermanagh passes some of the county’s most scenic lakelands, and the town itself is worth time before or after the swim week if you are making a longer trip of it. There is more to see in Enniskillen and across Co. Fermanagh.
