Lady Dorothy Lowry-Corry: An Indefatigable Field-Worker - Heritage Talk

At Enniskillen Castle · Castle Barracks, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh BT74 7JY

Heritage lecture on local historical figure

Enniskillen Castle is hosting a free heritage talk on one of Fermanagh’s most remarkable figures - a woman who spent decades on the ground, recording ancient stones and court tombs at a time when few women worked seriously in Irish archaeology. Dr Kieran O’Connor’s talk on Lady Dorothy Lowry-Corry is the kind of Saturday morning event that suits anyone with a curiosity about the county: no prior knowledge required, no charge at the door, and a guided tour of the castle thrown in afterwards.

What to expect

Lady Dorothy Lowry-Corry (1885-1967) was born at Castle Coole and grew up with Fermanagh’s landscape and its early Christian remains on her doorstep. She published widely in the Royal Irish Academy and the Ulster Journal of Archaeology, and her fieldwork left a real mark - she was the first to properly record the carved stone figures on Boa Island and Lustymore Island in Lough Erne, and she discovered the Corracloona Court Tomb in County Leitrim. She served as vice-president of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland and sat on the Ancient Monuments Advisory Committee. The title “indefatigable field-worker” is not a stretch.

Dr Kieran O’Connor will examine her life and contribution in a talk running from 10:15am. That is followed by a guided tour of the castle itself, so the morning covers both a biographical lecture and a hands-on look at one of Fermanagh’s most significant historic sites. The talk and tour run until approximately 12:15pm.

Getting there

Enniskillen sits at the junction of the A4 and A32, and most routes into town will bring you close to the castle on the banks of the River Erne. From Dublin, the N3 to Cavan and then west via Belturbet is the most direct road; from Belfast the A4 via Dungannon is around 1 hour 40 minutes. Bus Eireann and Translink both serve Enniskillen from major towns. The castle address is Castle Barracks, BT74 7JY - parking in the town centre is available a short walk away.

While you’re in Enniskillen

The castle sits in the middle of town, so it is easy to pair the morning with a walk along the Erne, a look at the Buttermarket craft quarter, or a drive out to Lough Erne for the afternoon. There is more to see in Enniskillen and across Co. Fermanagh.
