At Lough Erne · Lough Erne, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh
Lough Erne has a long history of drawing open water swimmers from across Ireland and beyond, and the annual Lough Erne Open Water Swim is one of the best ways to experience it. Organised by Fermanagh Triathlon Club, this community event opens the dark, fresh water of the lough to swimmers at multiple distances - making it a genuine option for first-timers completing an open water course and for swimmers gunning for a serious long-distance effort alike. The setting does a lot of the work: Lower Lough Erne spreads out wide and calm, ringed by drumlins and ancient islands, and swimming through it at race pace is something quite different to a pool.
The event runs distance options to suit a range of abilities. Shorter courses give newer open water swimmers a supported, structured way in - safety boats and marshals are on the water throughout, and wetsuits are permitted (and sensible, given Fermanagh temperatures in late July). Experienced swimmers tend to go long, and the lough has the room for it: the wider section of Lower Lough Erne between Enniskillen and the western shoreline gives clear, open stretches with no tidal pull.
Lough Erne water runs cold even in summer - typical July temperatures sit around 15-17°C, which is refreshing rather than dangerous for wetsuit swimmers but worth knowing if you’re going skins. Arrive early to register, get your bearings at the entry point and acclimatise gradually. Bring warm layers and a hot drink for after - the post-swim chill is real. Ear plugs, gloves and booties are optional but popular. Tow floats are good practice and may be required for some distances.
Enniskillen sits at the junction of the A4 and A32, roughly equidistant from Belfast (about 90 minutes) and Dublin (about two hours via the A3/N3). Bus Éireann and Translink both run services into the town. The event venue on Lough Erne is accessible from multiple jetty points around the lough; check the Fermanagh Triathlon Club’s registration information for the specific start location and parking arrangements, as these can vary by distance category.
The town itself rewards a few hours - Enniskillen Castle sits right on the water’s edge, and the Devenish Island monastic ruins are a short boat ride from town. There is more to see in Enniskillen and across Co. Fermanagh.
