At Ferns Village · Ferns, Co. Wexford
Ferns is one of the most historically loaded villages in Ireland, and this free self-guided walking trail is the clearest way to take it all in. The 2.5km route threads through 1,400 years of Irish history - early Christian monasticism, Norman conquest, Gaelic kingship, and the blood-soaked summer of 1798 - without ever straying far from the village centre. It suits anyone with a pair of comfortable shoes and a couple of hours to spare, from families with older children to solo visitors doing a deeper Wexford road trip.
The trail follows 18 numbered waymarker studs set into the pavements along Upper and Lower Main Street, so you never need a map to navigate - just follow the studs and let the sites unfold. Key stops include:
The trail is self-guided and open during daylight hours. Guided tours of key medieval sites are available through the Medieval Ferns Experience - pre-booking required for those.
Ferns lies in south-central County Wexford, roughly 20km south of Enniscorthy on the N11. By car from Dublin, follow the M11/N11 south and turn off at the Ferns junction - the drive takes around an hour and forty minutes. Bus Eireann services connect Enniscorthy to the wider county; from Enniscorthy, Ferns is a short drive west. Parking is available in the village centre, close to where the trail begins.
The castle and abbey are impressive enough that most people find they spend longer than the estimated 40 minutes. Pack a light rain layer and sensible footwear - some ground around the ruins is uneven. There is more to see in Ferns and across Co. Wexford.
