Foil Arms & Hog: A Work in Progress

At Backstage Theatre · Farneyhoogan, Longford, Co. Longford

What to expect

Foil Arms & Hog road-test new material at Backstage Theatre on Wednesday 21 October, an intimate work-in-progress date ahead of what the venue bills as the Irish sketch trio’s largest world tour to date. The three performers have built an online audience of more than a billion views for their sketch comedy, and a work-in-progress show means the material on the night is still being shaped rather than a finished, polished set, jokes get tried, cut, rewritten and tried again in front of a live room. Backstage Theatre’s own listing warns of “laughter, tears and in rare cases prolonged awkward silences,” which is as fair a description of a work-in-progress night as any: the trio are using the Longford audience to find out what actually lands before they take the finished hour on the road internationally. Seating is in the Main Auditorium. For comedy audiences, a date like this is a chance to see a well-known touring act in a small room, at pub-gig prices, before the material is locked in for the bigger tour.

Getting there

Backstage Theatre is on Farneyhoogan on the edge of Longford town, a short drive from the town centre with on-site parking for anyone driving in. Longford has its own railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Sligo Intercity line, an easy walk or short taxi ride from the theatre, and Bus Éireann routes also serve the town. By road, the N4 connects Longford to Dublin in around ninety minutes. The box office can be reached on 043 3347888, Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, for booking or accessibility queries.

While you’re in Longford

A small-room date from a touring act with this kind of online following is worth building an evening around. Longford town has a run of pubs and places to eat within walking distance of the theatre for a bite or a drink before curtain, and the town sits at the southern edge of Lough Ree, with the wider Shannon waterways close by if you want to make more of the trip. There is more to see in Longford and across Co. Longford.
