Ballyconneely Pony Show 2026

At Ballyconneely · Ballyconneely, Connemara, Co. Galway

Connemara pony show

The Ballyconneely Pony Show is one of those summer days in the west of Ireland that feels completely of itself - a community-run celebration of the Connemara pony, held every third Sunday in July in a small village on the edge of the Atlantic. It draws breeders, buyers and families from across the region, and with over 200 entries recorded in recent years it ranks as the second largest show of its kind in Ireland. If you have any interest in native breeds, rural life, or simply a good day out in one of the most striking corners of Connacht, this is worth the drive.

What to expect

The heart of the show is the Connemara pony competition, where local breeders bring their best animals forward for judging. These are working ponies bred for Connemara’s rough terrain, hardy and sure-footed, and the competitions draw serious interest from both breeders and buyers - ponies are bought and sold on the day. Alongside the main ring, a dog show runs parallel for anyone who wants to see working dogs and beloved pets put through their paces. A craft show gives local makers a platform, and a bonny baby competition adds a cheerful family note to proceedings. The whole event is organised by the local community rather than a commercial promoter, which gives it a particular warmth and ease.

Getting there

Ballyconneely sits about 10 km south of Clifden, reached via the R341 through Connemara. From Galway city the drive takes roughly an hour and a quarter, heading west on the N59 to Clifden and then south on the R341. There is no reliable public transport direct to Ballyconneely, so a car is the practical option - Bus Eireann serves Clifden from Galway, and from there a taxi or hired car covers the last stretch. Parking at community events in Ballyconneely is typically in the field beside the venue; arrive with some time to spare on a busy show day.

While you’re in Ballyconneely

The village sits between coral-strand beaches and open bog, with the Connemara Smokehouse at Bunowen Pier and Point Pony Trekking nearby for anyone who wants to extend the day. There is more to see in Ballyconneely and across Co. Galway.
