Gorey Medieval History Walking Tour

At Gorey Town Centre · Main Street, Gorey, Co. Wexford

Gorey medieval town heritage walking tour

Gorey has a longer history than most people expect from a County Wexford market town. Its Norman origins date to at least 1296, when records first mention a settlement on this site, and the shape of its main street and market square still echoes that medieval layout. This guided walking tour, organised by the North Wexford Historical Society, puts that history into focus - taking you around the town centre with an expert local guide to explain what you are actually looking at and why it matters. It suits anyone curious about Irish history, Wexford’s Norman past, or simply how a medieval market town worked and how it became the place you are standing in today.

What to expect

The tour covers Gorey town centre on foot, guided by members of the North Wexford Historical Society, who have been researching and documenting the heritage of this part of Wexford for decades. Stops include St Michael’s Church on St Michael’s Road - a remarkably early Pugin church, built in 1839 in the Romanesque style rather than the Gothic Pugin usually favoured, and considered one of the most important Romanesque-style buildings of his career in Ireland. The market square is another focus: its position and proportions trace directly to the medieval trading settlement that grew here under Norman influence. Guides explain how the town’s street plan, its fortification sites, and its market function developed together, and how that medieval DNA shaped Gorey right up to the present. Expect a mix of standing outside buildings, walking between sites, and hearing the kind of local detail that does not appear in guidebooks. Duration is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a layer - this is an outdoor tour and August weather in Wexford is variable.

Getting there

Gorey sits on the N11 Dublin to Wexford road, roughly 95 km south of Dublin and 55 km north of Wexford town. By car, it is an easy drive from either direction with free parking available on side streets near Main Street. By public transport, Bus Eireann and Wexford Bus both serve the town from Dublin and Wexford, and Gorey railway station is on the Dublin Heuston to Rosslare Europort line with regular services. The town centre and the tour route are flat and walkable from the station.

While you’re in Gorey

The town has a good main street for a browse after the tour, with independent shops and cafes alongside the older streetscape you will have just learned to read differently. There is more to see in Gorey and across Co. Wexford.
