Irish Language and Heritage Celebration

At Kildare Community Center · Kildare, Co. Kildare

Irish language and heritage celebration

Every September, Kildare town becomes a small but lively meeting point for anyone with an interest in the Irish language - whether they have a cúpla focal or have been speaking it all their lives. This free-to-low-cost celebration, organised by Conradh na Gaeilge and local heritage partners, brings language workshops, traditional music, and cultural talks together in a single afternoon. It suits families with curious children, adults who learned Irish at school and let it drift, and confident speakers who simply want an occasion to use it.

What to expect

The afternoon runs across several workshops happening at the same time, so you can follow what interests you rather than sitting through a fixed programme. Language workshops are pitched at different levels - complete beginners get a gentle introduction, while more advanced speakers can join conversation groups or dive into heritage topics through Irish. Alongside the language work there are traditional music performances throughout the afternoon, cultural presentations covering local heritage, and the kind of informal mingling that tends to happen when Irish speakers gather in the same room. Food and refreshments are available on site. The event runs for roughly three to four hours, giving you room to move between strands at your own pace.

Kildare has a genuine track record with this kind of event. Cill Dara le Gaeilge, the county’s own language planning body, has been running Irish language activities across the county since 2017, and Kildare was the first county in Ireland to adopt a formal Irish language plan. The September date sits outside the main Seachtain na Gaeilge season, making it one of the few chances during the year to catch this kind of programme outside of spring.

Getting there

Kildare town is well served by rail - Irish Rail runs regular services from Heuston Station in Dublin on the Cork and Limerick mainlines, with the journey taking around forty minutes. From Naas, it is a short drive east on the R415. Ample parking is available around the town centre, and the community centre is within easy walking distance of the train station. Bus Éireann also connects Kildare town to surrounding towns in the county.

While you’re in Kildare

The town has the ruins of a medieval cathedral and round tower a short walk from the centre, and the Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens are just outside the town. There is more to see in Kildare and across Co. Kildare.
