At Live at the Marquee · Maughan House, Marina Commercial Park, Centre Park Road, Cork
One of the great American singer-songwriters brings his All-Star Band to Cork this summer for what is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about nights of the Live at the Marquee season. James Taylor last played this venue back in 2009, so this is a rare return - more than 50 years into a career that has produced over 100 million album sales worldwide. The show is sold out, which tells you something about how Cork received the announcement. If you have a ticket, clear the diary for the evening; if you missed out, resale platforms are your best bet.
This is billed as “An Evening with James Taylor and His All-Star Band,” organised by Aiken Promotions. Taylor’s back catalogue runs deep - Fire and Rain, You’ve Got a Friend, Carolina in My Mind, How Sweet It Is - and his live shows are known for being warm, precise and generous with the songs people actually came to hear. The All-Star Band has toured with him for years, so the playing is tight without being cold.
Live at the Marquee itself is a 5,000-capacity striped tent on the former Tedcastle’s Yard at Centre Park Road, close to Páirc Uí Chaoimh. It has been Cork’s flagship summer concert venue since 2005, when it launched as part of Cork’s European Capital of Culture year. The tented format means the acoustics are intimate for the size - you are never as far from the stage as you might expect. Doors open at 6.30pm; the main act typically hits the stage between 8.30pm and 9pm, with sets finishing around 10.30pm.
The venue is cashless, so leave the notes at home and bring your bank card. Food vans operate on-site, and the nearby Marina Market adds to the options if you arrive early. Drinks run from around €4.25 for a half pint.
Live at the Marquee sits on Centre Park Road in Cork’s docklands, roughly seven minutes by car from the city centre in light traffic. On foot from the city it takes about 30 minutes, or around 15 minutes from Ballintemple. From the city centre, head for the Albert Road roundabout and turn left onto Centre Park Road.
On-site parking is available - 300 spaces at €14.20 per car - but for a sold-out show it is worth buying your parking ticket through Ticketmaster in advance rather than chancing it on the night. After the gig, traffic backs up on Centre Park Road; consider being collected from Monahan Road or the Páirc Uí Chaoimh area instead. Bus services connect Cork city centre to the docklands if you prefer to leave the car behind.
Cork city rewards an early arrival - the English Market is a short walk from the city centre and makes a good early-evening stop before heading to the venue. There is more to see in Cork and across Co. Cork.
