At Gleneagle Arena · Muckross Road, Killarney, Co. Kerry
Pete Tong has been at the centre of dance music for over three decades, first as a BBC Radio 1 tastemaker and now as the force behind one of the most unusual live shows on the circuit. Ibiza Classics pairs his DJ craft with a 65-piece orchestra - The Essential Orchestra - to replay the anthems of a generation with real strings, brass, and woodwind sitting alongside the electronic arrangements. If you spent any summers in Ibiza, or simply grew up on late-night radio, this is the kind of show that goes straight past nostalgia and into something more physical. It suits anyone who loves dance music and has ever wondered what it would sound like with a full orchestra underneath it.
The concept started in 2015 when the BBC brought Pete Tong and conductor Jules Buckley together for a one-off show at the Royal Albert Hall. It sold out immediately and has toured ever since. The set typically moves through the defining tracks of Ibiza’s peak years - Café del Mar moods, big room house, trance classics - with The Essential Orchestra reinterpreting them live. Tong works the room as a DJ while the orchestra performs alongside him; it is not a classical concert and it is not a standard club night, but something in between that tends to hold a crowd of all ages. Doors open at 7:30pm and the show starts at 8:30pm. Standing is strictly over-18s; under-18s may attend only in the seated area with an adult, and ID will be checked. Tickets start from around €65 and are available through Ticketmaster.
Killarney is well served by rail and bus. Irish Rail runs regular services from Cork, Limerick, and Dublin Heuston (change at Mallow for the Kerry line). Bus Éireann operates routes from Cork and Tralee. The Gleneagle Arena sits on Muckross Road about 10 minutes’ walk south of Killarney town centre - close enough to walk from most town-centre accommodation. The venue has on-site parking, though for a busy arena night arriving early or by taxi is the easier call.
Killarney in early July is lively without being overwhelmed - the lakes and the national park are at their best, and the town has a good spread of pubs and restaurants worth an evening. There is more to see in Killarney and across Co. Kerry.
