At Castleisland Town · Castleisland, Co. Kerry
The Castleisland 10k is a community road race that brings out both serious club runners and those doing their first 10km. Organised by Castleisland Community Sports and chip-timed throughout, it is a proper race - not a novelty fun run - but the atmosphere is relaxed enough that a first-timer will feel at home. If you have been building up your distance and want a measured course with a real result at the end, this is worth the trip into East Kerry in July.
The race covers 10 kilometres through Castleisland town and its surrounding roads. Chip timing means every finisher gets an accurate time regardless of where they line up at the start. There are competitive categories across age groups - from junior runners through to seniors and masters - so you are racing against your peers rather than the field at large. Post-race, finishers receive certificates and refreshments, which makes the whole morning feel like an event rather than just a race.
Entry starts from €14, and registration is available on the morning of the race for those who have not booked in advance. Arriving early is wise - it gives you time to collect your number, do a warm-up, and find out how the course lays out. Castleisland is home to Riocht Athletic Club, one of the stronger athletics clubs in Kerry, so the local running community knows how to put on a well-organised race day.
Castleisland sits in the Sliabh Luachra region of East Kerry, about 18km east of Tralee on the N21. From Cork, take the N20 north and connect via Mallow; from Limerick, the N21 comes through Abbeyfeale into the town directly. Bus Eireann connects Castleisland to Tralee on the 40 route, though a car is the most practical option for an early 10am start. Parking is available in the town centre - the main street and adjoining car parks generally handle race day numbers without difficulty, and the town is compact enough that nothing is far from the start line.
The town sits close to Crag Cave, one of Ireland’s most accessible show caves and a good stop for those travelling with family. The surrounding Sliabh Luachra area is strong trad music country, with sessions and festivals throughout the summer. There is more to see in Castleisland and across Co. Kerry.
