Killarney Racecourse Summer Racing

At Killarney Racecourse · Killarney Racecourse, Killarney, Co. Kerry

Killarney Racecourse summer racing event

A day at Killarney Races is as much about where you are as what you are watching. The racecourse sits right beside Lough Leane with the MacGillycuddy Reeks rising behind the back straight - on a clear July afternoon, it is one of the most handsome settings for horse racing anywhere in Ireland. This two-day late-July fixture draws a mixture of serious racing fans and visitors who have made the most of a Kerry summer’s day and want to round it off properly. Families, groups, and solo punters all mix easily in the public enclosures.

What to expect

The meeting covers both flat racing and national hunt races across two days. Killarney runs a left-handed oval track, just over a mile and two furlongs around, with some undulation that keeps things interesting for jockeys and horse-watchers alike. Quality fields travel down from yards across Ireland for the summer fixtures, so the racing card has real competitive weight to it, not just a filler meeting.

General admission gets you into the viewing stands, the bookies ring, the parade ring and the public bars and restaurants. The parade ring is worth lingering at before each race - watching the horses walk out up close is one of the underrated pleasures of an Irish race day. There is also a Panoramic Restaurant with a hospitality package for those who want a more formal sit-down experience and uninterrupted views over the track.

Getting there

Killarney town is served by direct trains from Cork (roughly 1 hour 20 minutes) and from Dublin Heuston (about 3 hours). The racecourse is on the western edge of town, close enough to walk from the town centre in around 20 minutes, or a short taxi from the station. If you are driving, there is on-site parking available. The N22 from Cork and the N72 from the east are the main road approaches; signposting on race days is generally reliable.

While you’re in Killarney

The racecourse neighbours Ross Castle and the shores of Lough Leane, so arriving early gives you time to take in the National Park before the first race. There is more to see in Killarney and across Co. Kerry.
