At Tralee Sports Complex · Tralee Sports Complex, Tralee, Co. Kerry
Tralee Boxing Club has been running since 1936 - nearly ninety years of producing provincial and national champions from this corner of Kerry. The summer show is one of the highlights of the club’s year: an evening of competitive amateur boxing across multiple weight categories, with local boxers facing opponents from clubs around Munster and beyond. If you’ve never watched live amateur boxing before, this is a good place to start. The atmosphere is close and immediate in a way that television never captures, and the skill level is genuinely high. It suits sports fans, families with older children, and anyone curious about a sport with deep roots in Irish community life.
Multiple bouts run across the evening, with fighters matched by weight category. The format follows the standard amateur points-scoring system - three rounds per bout, with judges ringside. Tralee’s boxers train under experienced coaches and the club has a track record of fielding fighters who have gone on to national level competition. Regional clubs send their own competitors, so you’ll see a variety of styles and ages across the card. Doors open at 7:30pm and bouts run through the evening. The venue has a sports-hall setup, which means ringside seating is relatively close to the action. Refreshments are available on the night.
Tralee is the county town of Kerry, roughly an hour from Killarney by road and about three hours from Dublin via the M7/N21. The Sports Complex sits within Tralee town - the facility is locally known as “The Complex” and is well signed. Bus Eireann serves Tralee from Cork, Limerick, and Dublin, and the town is on the Tralee - Dublin rail line via Mallow (Irish Rail, roughly three hours from Heuston). If you’re driving in from the Kerry Peninsula or the Ring, the N70 and N22 both feed into town without difficulty. Parking is available at the Complex itself.
August is a good month to be in Tralee - the town is lively and Kerry’s best scenery is on the doorstep. The Dingle Peninsula is a short drive west, and the town itself has the Kerry County Museum and the Tralee Ship Canal walk if you want to fill the afternoon before the bouts begin. There is more to see in Tralee and across Co. Kerry.
