At Various outdoor recreation venues · Multiple locations across Kildare
A summer afternoon and a putter in hand is a fine combination, and Co. Kildare has a handful of proper outdoor spots to make that happen. This is a round-up of family-friendly mini golf and outdoor activity venues across the county during summer 2026 - good for a half-day out with kids, a low-key break from the motorway, or something to do when the sun actually shows up. You do not need any golfing ability; the whole point is the argument over who is worst.
The standout outdoor option is Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park near Rathangan, which has an 18-hole mini golf course with a heritage theme - holes named after a Castle, a Barge, and a Horse Shoe among others. The course sits next to the outdoor play area and pet farm, looking out over the Bog of Allen. Par is set at 40, which sounds reasonable until someone takes six shots on hole three. Mini golf is bundled into standard park admission, so you also get the road train, the walking trails, and the pet farm in the same ticket. The park opens at 10am daily, with last admission at 4pm.
Over near Prosperous in North Kildare, the Kildare Maze pairs crazy golf with a 1.5-acre hedge maze, a wooden maze with eight control points, an adventure trail, and a zip wire. It works well for a mixed-age group - younger children gravitate to the mazes and play area while older ones compete on the golf course or take on the zip wire.
Both venues are best visited on a dry day. Wear flat shoes or runners; the outdoor courses are on grass and gravel paths.
Kildare town is about 50km south-west of Dublin, just off the M7. The county is well connected: the train from Heuston Station reaches Kildare town in under an hour, and Newbridge and Naas are on the same line. For the Lullymore park specifically, a car is the practical option - it is in a rural location between Rathangan and Kildare town, with ample free parking on site. The Kildare Maze near Prosperous is similarly car-friendly with parking at the venue.
The county is horse country - the Irish National Stud and the Japanese Gardens sit just outside Kildare town and are genuinely worth a visit if the group has a few hours. The town itself is compact, with the cathedral and the round tower easy to walk around before or after. There is more to see in Kildare and across Co. Kildare.
