Children playing in a Kildare county park

Summer in Kildare has a straightforward logic: the county’s 19 public parks throw their gates open and stay that way from dawn to dusk, free of charge. Kildare County Council runs these spaces across all five municipal districts - Naas, Kildare/Newbridge, Athy, Celbridge/Leixlip, and Clane/Maynooth - so wherever you are in the county, there is a well-maintained park within easy reach. This is the kind of day out that needs no booking, no budget, and no particular plan: pack a picnic, bring the kids, and let the afternoon sort itself.

What to expect

The parks range from half a hectare to 16 hectares, so there is real variety in scale. Most have modern playground equipment covering a spread of ages - climbing frames, swings, and slides for younger children alongside more challenging structures for older ones. Outdoor gyms are available at several sites, letting adults get a workout while the kids play. Multi-use games areas (MUGAs) are dotted around the county for ball games and impromptu sports sessions. Walking and jogging paths loop through the larger parks, making them comfortable for buggies as well as older children on bikes. Picnic benches and seating are standard across the estate, and most parks have parking and toilet facilities. The Naas district park, for example, includes a full-size all-weather pitch, three five-a-side pitches, a running track, and a playground - all at no cost.

Getting there

Kildare town itself sits on the main Dublin to Cork/Limerick rail line, with regular Irish Rail services from Heuston Station taking around 45 minutes. The M7 motorway connects the county to Dublin and Limerick by road, with Naas, Newbridge, and Kildare town all well signposted. For smaller towns like Athy and Celbridge, a car is the most practical option. All public parks have free on-site parking.

While you’re in Kildare

Kildare town sits close to the Curragh, Ireland’s flat racing heartland, and the Irish National Stud with its Japanese Gardens is a short drive away. There is more to see in Kildare and across Co. Kildare.
