Kingfishr - Live at the Square, Derry

At Ebrington Square · Ebrington Square, Derry, Co. Derry

Kingfishr concert at Ebrington Square, Derry

Kingfishr have been one of Irish music’s most talked-about acts for the past few years - a Limerick band who blends timeless Irish folk roots with contemporary pop and indie energy, the kind of sound that earns you support slots with Bruce Springsteen and Snow Patrol before you’ve even played your first headline arena. This August bank holiday Monday they bring that show to Derry for the first time, taking over Ebrington Square as part of the Live at the Square summer concert series. It suits anyone who follows Irish music closely, anyone catching up with the Kingfishr buzz, or anyone simply looking for a good open-air evening in good company.

What to expect

Ebrington Square holds a large outdoor crowd comfortably and the Live at the Square series uses a proper production setup - stage, sound and lighting scaled for an event of this size. Kingfishr’s live show is known for its emotional charge; they mix folk-inflected storytelling with pop hooks in a way that gets a crowd singing. The band has been deliberately building their headline shows since 2022, upsizing venue by venue, so this is a step up in scale for them and typically that brings out the best in their performance. Their album Halcyon gave them chart success in both Ireland and the UK, so there is plenty of recognisable material to draw on. The Derry show sits in a week of major concerts at the square - James Arthur and JLS are also on the bill for later in the same week - which gives the whole run a proper festival feel even if you’re only attending one night.

Getting there

Derry sits at the north-west corner of Ireland, well served by road from Belfast (roughly an hour on the A6), Donegal town (about an hour south on the N13/A5) and Dublin (roughly two and a half hours on the M1 and A6). Bus Eireann and Translink both run services into Derry; the Airporter coach connects Derry Bus Centre to Belfast International and George Best City Airport. Ebrington Square is on the east bank of the River Foyle - cross the Peace Bridge from the city centre and it is a short walk. The Peace Bridge foot crossing is the most direct route from the city centre car parks, the train station and the bus station, all of which sit on the west bank. Parking is available in Derry city centre; if you are coming from further afield, arriving early gives you the pick of spots.

While you’re in Derry

The August bank holiday week is one of the better times to be in Derry - the city has energy about it, and Ebrington Square itself is worth a wander before the gates open. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
