Lahardane, a small village on the shore of Lough Conn in North Mayo, has held a harvest fair since the early 1900s, when it began life as a traditional hiring fair at the end of the harvest season. More than a century on, it is one of the oldest running festivals in the county, still held on Leonard’s Field on 15 August and still run to support the local national school.
The fair keeps its old-fashioned character: street stalls, a funfair, craft tables, a wheel of fortune and a tea tent sit alongside more contemporary additions like face painting, bouncy castles and circus performers. A dog show and Irish dancing displays run through the afternoon, and live music keeps the field going until the fair winds down. The day builds to its traditional close with a welly-throwing competition and the annual auction, a fixture of the fair since its earliest years and now the main fundraiser for Lahardane National School. Numbers are modest compared to the county’s bigger festivals, which is part of the appeal - it is a proper local field day rather than a produced event.
Lahardane is on the R315, on the eastern shore of Lough Conn, about 13km from Crossmolina and 20km from Ballina. There is no direct bus service into the village; the nearest Bus Éireann connections run through Crossmolina and Ballina, so a car is the practical way to get there. Parking is on Leonard’s Field itself and on the surrounding roads.
The village sits close to the Lough Conn shoreline, popular with anglers and walkers, so the fair is often combined with a day out on the lake. There is more to see in Lahardane and across Co. Mayo.
