The Green Loy: Celebrating Folk Art

At The Dock · St George's Terrace, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim

Folk art exhibition of traditional Leitrim craft objects

The Green Loy, an exhibition celebrating the folk art and everyday craft of Leitrim and the north west, is on at The Dock in Carrick-on-Shannon until Saturday, 22 August 2026. Curated by writer and broadcaster Vincent Woods with ceramic artist Katy West and dancer and community artist Edwina Guckian, the show takes ordinary rural objects, a loy, which is a traditional Leitrim spade, a hay cock, a reworked dresser, and asks whether they count as art in their own right alongside anything made for a gallery wall.

What to expect

On display are handcrafted objects including tin fiddles, Leitrim chairs, animal masks and textiles, alongside a site-specific wall installation built for the space. The exhibition pays tribute to the American folklorist Henry Glassie, who spent years documenting craft and storytelling traditions in the Ballymenone area of Fermanagh, just across the border from Leitrim, and the show extends that same attention to the county’s own rural material culture. Questions about where folk craft ends and fine art begins run through the whole display rather than being answered in a single wall text. The exhibition period has included a related concert on 25 July at The Dock featuring traditional singers and musicians from the region, and a community Bring and Tell session inviting local people to bring in and talk about their own family objects.

The Dock is on St George’s Terrace in Carrick-on-Shannon town centre, a short walk from the bus stop and railway station on the Dublin to Sligo line, with public car parks nearby.
