Manorhamilton Heritage Trail Walking Tour

At Manorhamilton town centre · Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim

Manorhamilton Castle historic heritage site

Manorhamilton’s Heritage Trail is a free, self-guided walk through one of north Leitrim’s most historically layered towns - a place where a 17th-century castle, a rare Star Fort, and a former workhouse all sit within comfortable walking distance of each other. Organised by the Manorhamilton Historical Society, the trail runs on 15 July 2026 with guided options available alongside the self-guided route. It suits families, solo visitors, and anyone with a passing interest in Plantation-era Ireland and what came after it.

What to expect

The trail covers approximately 3.5 km and takes about an hour and a half at an easy pace. You start at Manorhamilton Castle, built between 1634 and 1638 by Sir Frederick Hamilton as a fortified house. It is one of only six castles in Ireland designed with defensive flanking towers at each corner, and a Heritage Centre inside holds artefacts, replica period costumes, furniture, and a scale model of the castle as it once stood. From there, the route takes in the Star Fort - a military fortification from the 1600s located at the Church of Ireland site - which is an unusually well-preserved example of its type. You also pass the Old Protestant Church and Graveyard, the former Railway Station, and the site of the old workhouse, each marked with interpretation panels. The trail booklet (available to download from manorhamilton.ie or pick up at the Heritage Centre, the Glens Centre, or the local library) ties all of this together and adds detail that the panels alone cannot give you.

Guided walks can be arranged directly through the Manorhamilton Historical Society, who bring local knowledge that goes well beyond the markers. The self-guided version works equally well for those arriving outside of event hours.

Getting there

Manorhamilton is in north County Leitrim, roughly an hour’s drive from Sligo and about 30 minutes from Enniskillen. From Dublin the drive is around two and a half hours via the N4 and N16. Bus Eireann runs services from Sligo to Manorhamilton, making it reachable without a car, though services are limited so check timetables in advance. There is car parking in the town centre, close to the castle where the trail begins.

While you’re in Manorhamilton

The town sits at the meeting point of four river valleys and is surrounded by the North Leitrim Glens, an area of limestone uplands and wooded gorges that reward an afternoon’s walking or driving if you have the time. There is more to see in Manorhamilton and across Co. Leitrim.
